Garden Watering Can
The traditional English garden watering can is a treasure that any dedicated gardener covets. Perhaps it’s the old and christened one that is an antique and found at a neighborhood garage sale or thrift shop. Or maybe you prefer the new and painted a sunny yellow one sitting at your local garden center that has been sitting on the shelf and whispering, “Buy me, buy me” that last few trips. Maybe you’re in need of an indoor can, one made of copper, to suit your indoor garden needs. Whichever type you seek, a metal watering can is preferred by most gardeners.
The plastic versions can and do serve a gardener well, but their shelf life is minimal when compared to a metal can and there’s something about a metal can that makes it worth the extra pennies (or dollars).
A metal garden watering can, if made well, will be a treasure to pass down for many generations to come. While heavier than a plastic watering can, it is stronger. Besides, the aging process that takes place with the metal, makes it worth the extra cash. Of course, we aren’t likely to be running out in a recession and splurging on ourselves, but it is a great gift to be given and there’s nothing wrong with hinting around with suggestions for your upcoming birthday or holiday gift!
You know how the plastic versions tend to weaken and begin to leak at the base because of lack of support for the spout? A metal watering can has spout support, giving it extra strength and keeping it from bending. Many watering cans that come in your metal varieties also have extended spouts for hard to reach places. You won’t find that in plastic – not one that will last too long, anyhow.
When choosing a metal watering can, make sure to look for one with brass fittings, which are more durable and won’t corrode. This is true for the spout end, as well. You will also want one with at least a 2-gallon capacity and fairly easy to carry.
Whichever can you choose, gardening is easier and much more enjoyable when you have the right tools to work with, so make it one you will enjoy for a long time, as it most likely will outlast you.
